OpenSolaris 2009.06

OpenSolaris 2009.06 is the latest release of the OpenSolaris Operating System, a powerful and complete operating environment for users, developers and deployers. OpenSolaris prides itself on being a secure, stable, and highly scalable system. The OpenSolaris OS is open source software, and freely re-distributable and provides all the tools users expect from a modern computing environment both installed by default and available on our online network package repositories. OpenSolaris 2009.06 is also the first official release to come to the SPARC platform. Enjoy OpenSolaris on all Sun4v based platforms (UltraSPARC T1 and T2) and Sun4u based platforms (UltraSPARC II, III and IV) with an OBP level of 4.17 or greater. OpenSolaris for SPARC is only available as an Automated Install based image at this time.

Solaris Operating System

Solaris is a computer operating system, the proprietary Unix variant developed by Sun Microsystems. Early versions, based on BSD UNIX, were called SunOS. The shift to a System V code base in SunOS 5 was marked by changing the name to Solaris 2. Earlier versions were retroactively named Solaris 1.x. After version 2.6, Sun dropped the “2.” from the name. Solaris consists of the SunOS UNIX base operating system plus a graphical user environment. Solaris is written in a platform-independent manner and is available for SPARC and x86 processors (including x86_64). Historically, Solaris used to be a proprietary operating system, however, starting from version 10, its licence has changed and the product is now distributed free of charge for any system or purpose, while its source code is available from OpenSolaris.org under a license approved by Open Source Initiative (OSI).

Updates in Pardus Technologies

With the release of Pardus 2009, core technologies like PiSi and COMAR are updated to provide new features. YALI is also updated to offer a smoother and more reliable installation experience. The enhancements in Mudur initialization system provide a faster and more robust startup process along with a better remote file system support.

All of the Pardus managers have been refactored and optimized for KDE4. New Pardus tools, Network Plasmoid for easy network profile switching and Service Plasmoid for easy service management are now available in our repositories. These plasmoids can be placed either on the desktop, or any of the panels on the desktop for easier access.

A new manager System Manager has been added to provide easy configuration of system wide settings, like the default locale, keymap, timezone etc.

Package Manager and PiSi are now a lot faster than before, thanks to the new caching mechanizm. Many changes have been made to the packaging system of PiSi, making PiSi packages about 20% smaller, and also delta package support will be on by default from now on. Package installing and updating will be a lot faster and will require much less bandwidth. Package component tree has also been refactored, letting users find their preferred packages even more easily.

Installation system Yalı has a boost with refactoring and new PiSi features, doubling the installation speed of Pardus. Pardus now installs everything in about 15 minutes on an average computer of today. A new feature rescue mode support is also added to Yalı, which can be used to take back previous package updates, restore bootloader etc.

Merry Christmas from the pfSense team – 2.0 now beta!

Our Christmas gift to the community is our 2.0 release reaching the beta milestone.

What does this mean? The release is feature complete, with no new features being added, and should stay relatively stable throughout the remainder of the development process. That’s not to say it’s production ready though, most of our developers are using it in production and have been for months, but unless you have a solid understanding of the underlying system and can manually verify the configuration, 2.0 is not yet for you.

Description:

SystemRescueCd is a Linux system rescue disk available as a bootable CD-ROM or USB stick for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk. It comes with a lot of linux software such as system tools (parted, partimage, fstools, …) and basic tools (editors, midnight commander, network tools). It requires no installation since you just have to boot on the CD-ROM. It can be used to perform admin tasks on both linux servers, linux desktops or windows boxes. The kernel supports most of the important file systems (ext2/ext3/ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, btrfs, xfs, jfs, vfat, ntfs, iso9660), as well as network filesystems (samba and nfs).

SimplyMEPIS 8.5 beta3 (relaesed)

Morgantown, WV, Dec 24, 2009 – MEPIS has announced that SimplyMEPIS 8.4.95, the third beta of MEPIS 8.5, is available from MEPIS and public mirrors. The ISO files for 32 and 64 bit processors are SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.4.95-b3_32.iso and SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.4.95-b3_64.iso respectively.

SimplyMEPIS 8.x is based on a Debian Stable foundation, but is enhanced with cherry picked updates to important applications. The 8.5 release features a KDE 4.3.4 desktop, while the 8.0 release continues to support KDE 3.5.10.

Warren Woodford reported: “This beta includes kernel 2.6.32.2, which we reconfigured slightly, based on user feedback, so kdenlive works with DV cameras. Kipi-plugins were updated to the new 1.0.0 release. And the beginning defaults for dolphin and the desktop were adjusted to be more ‘MEPIS-like.’ Konq-plugins were added to the build, to give us additional functionality in the KDE browser and file management.”

Warren continued: “For both 8.5 and 8.0; hwdata, hwinfo, and initramfs-tools were updated to improve hardware support. Thanks to the support of the University of Kent, there is a MEPIS package mirror at mirrorservice.org. The 8.5 and 8.0 apt sources.list was modified to point to it by default. This should improve package update speed for many users.”

Warren concluded by saying: “The Debian KDE team has provided bug fix updates to kdebase-workspace and kdebase which should make the desktop a bit more stable. The community continues to make improvements to the artwork and they are beginning work on an updated e-users manual.” “Although some users are happy with the functionality and stability of 8.5, as-is, we plan to continue making in-line improvements for a while, before declaring 8.5 to be final. Users of 8.5 should keep in mind that it is still a development release, which we could accidentally break. It is not recommended for use in production systems at this time.”
